The Cancer Centre was inaugurated by Mr. Suresh Shetty, State Minister for Health, Govt. of Maharashtra.
The Centre includes a Bone Marrow transplant facility, a first of its kind in the private sector in Mumbai. The Bone Marrow transplant (BMT) unit is a state of the art facility, comparable to best of facilities across the globe and is geared for performing both Autologous (related donor) and Allogenic (non-related donor) transplants. Bone Marrow transplant is a major treatment modality used for the management of various cancerous as well as non cancerous conditions. The rooms in the BMT unit are designed for patient comfort and ensure patient safety throughout their stay. With the installation of special High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters, patients are protected from infectious microbes in air, as the HEPA filters contineously deliver pure filtered air to the rooms. The installation of Centralized monitoring systems in every room, enables medical personnel to monitor the patients closely.
The Centre has a team of highly skilled and competent surgeons known to deliver the best possible outcomes and maximize the chances of cure in a variety of cancers. Surgical treatment is the main stay in solid organ cancers, usually an integral part of cancer treatment. Surgery is required for evaluating the extent of disease and treatment thereof. Larger and extensive surgeries often involve a team of doctors.
The centre is equipped with the most advanced radiation therapy (where the patient undergoes treatment for destroying the cancerous cells through radiation) equipment Rapid Arc TM which reduces the time required for a patient to undergo radiation exposure to five minutes from the current twenty minutes.
The radiation therapy technology at International Oncology Centre is based on the ‘Image Guided Radiotherapy’ (IGRT) platform which is the most advanced form of radiotherapy today. A compact advanced CT scanner helps make the most precise treatment possible. The Technology has an additional advantage of Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), a high-precision radiotherapy that utilizes computer-controlled x-ray accelerators, to deliver precise radiation doses that can target tumors of varied shapes. This helps to effectively minimize the damage to the surrounding normal tissues, unlike other available technologies. In addition, with IMRT, a higher dose can be given to the tumour when the specified area is required to be targeted more accurately.
The centre has a comprehensive Breast clinic, which brings all breast related issues under one roof with the primary aim of detecting and diagnosing any cancerous lesions early and providing treatment thereof, including breast reconstructive surgeries.
It will also provide breast cancer prevention counseling, patient education and breast cancer survivorship programmes.
A team of Dedicated Breast specialist, Breast care nurse, Medical & Radiation Oncologist, Radiologist and Oncopathologist discuss every case in a multidisciplinary meeting and then plan the treatment for the patient. A rapid and detailed diagnosis before every surgery is performed. This is done with complete involvement of the patient and their relatives at every step of the cancer journey.
