What is Geriatrics?

Geriatrics, or geriatric medicine, is a speciality that focuses on the health care of the elderly people. India, currently has the second largest population of older adults, and most of this population remains largely underserved. Senior citizens encounter multiple health issues that gradually lead to major morbidity and mortality in the community. Issues faced by the elderly are most often very challenging as they present in very unusual ways with multiple pathologies interacting simultaneously. They are prone to the side effects of poly-pharmacy. Elderly issues range from falls, fractures, urine and stool incontinence, pressure sores, joint pains, dementia, Parkinson’s disease to emotional, social, psychiatric, memory related issues.

• Very short consultation times in busy medicine OPDs - whereas an elderly patient needs a very patient hearing of their problems.
• Absence of a team approach/absence of co-ordination between speciality clinics.
• Absence of a holistic approach.
• Absence of health awareness/counselling/health education.. Example - very few of the elderly & caregivers know that there are vaccinations to prevent pneumonia in the elderly.
