Common chronic pains treated at our centre

Neck Pain

Neck Pain is most likely due to herniated disc, degenerative spine changes, myopathies. Neck pain is typically aching, cramping or shooting kind of pain may radiate to the arms.
Treatment modalities include cervical epidural injections, facet joint block, RF ablation and trigger point injections depending upon cause of pain.

Low Backache

Low backache is a disease of modern times. All of us will have low backache at some point of time. Most of the people who experience low backache for first time get better in 2 - 6weeks. However chronic backache or recurrent backache requires special management. For acute back pain it is necessary to seek help at the department.

Low backache could be caused due to

  • Wear & tear of spine called degeneration
  • These changes can occur in disc, facets joints, ligaments
  • Injuries to spine

Neurogenic pain is caused when herniated disc finches the nerve. This may cause damage the nerve and cause weakness & numbness in legs.
You may be asked for simple tests and MRI scan to reach diagnosis. Treatment modalities include bed rest, back brace, medication, physical therapy and exercise. Epidural steroid injections, facet join injections, trigger joint injection and rarely surgery.

Headache

Common types of headache include tension headache, migraine, cluster and sinus headache. Headache related to serious causes as bleeding in the brain or tumor require a team based approach with other tests. These needs to be diagnosed differentiated and treated accordingly.

Trigeminal Neuralgia

Trigeminal neuralgia is characterized by intense pain in eyes, lips, scalp, forehead and jaw on one side of the face. Pain is episodic shock like sometime triggered by routine daily activities. Once diagnosed can be treated effectively with medication, Radio frequency ablation and surgery.

Post Herpetic Neuralgia (Shingles)

One of the most common complications of shingles is persistant pain in the affected area even after rash has healed. Treatment modalities include medications nerve block and stimulators.

Neuropathic Pain

It is most commonly associated with diabetes or Injury. Management of Neuropathic Pain is with medication and interventional pain procedures.

Complex Regional Pain Syndromes (CRPS)

It may occur after an injury to arm or leg (CRPS-1) or in the absence of injury (CRPS II). Symptoms include hyperalgenia, burning pain in arm or leg, changes in colour, temperature and texture of affected swelling, swelling, joint stiffness and muscle atrophy. Early treatment and physical rehabilitation produces excellent results.

Cancer Pain

Cancer Pain is the most distressing type of pain. It is important to provide good pain relief during all stages of cancer treatment; so that the patient is comfortable. Treatment includes medication and various nerve block techniques.

Chronic Abdominal or Pelvic Pain

Chronic abdominal or pelvic pain can be caused because of chronic pancreatitis, pelvic inflammatory disease and endometriosis. It is important to diagnose the medical condition first so as to treat appropriately.

Shoulder Joint Pain

Shoulder being the most mobile joints is also prone for most types of injuries and degeneration. It results in chronic pain and limitation of movement. Intra articular, peri-articular, intrabursal injection of steroid, supra scapular nerve block and trigger point injection markedly reduce pain. Physical rehabilitation helps return back to normal life as fast as possible.

Myofascial Pain

A Myofascial trigger point is a hyper irritable spot usually within a skeletal muscle and is painful on compression. It can give rise to referred pain, motor dysfunction and autonomic phenomenon. Treatment modalities include dry needling, trigger point injection with local anesthetic and corticosteroids, FENTS, ultrasound massage and physical therapy.
