Every year on May 31st, the world unites to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use through World No Tobacco Day. This year, let’s take a moment to reflect on the toll tobacco takes on our health, our families, and our society — and why saying no to tobacco is one of the wisest choices we can make.
🚭 The Hidden Cost of Tobacco
Tobacco consumption, whether through smoking cigarettes, using chewing products like gutka and khaini, or newer habits like vaping, is a leading cause of preventable diseases and deaths worldwide. Did you know that the average smoker loses 6 to 10 years of life compared to a non-smoker? That’s a decade stolen by a habit that offers no real benefit.
Lung cancer, the world’s deadliest cancer, finds its primary cause in tobacco smoke. Similarly, chronic bronchitis, the third leading cause of death globally, is closely linked to long-term tobacco use. But the damage doesn’t stop there.
👄 Oral Cancer and Smokeless Tobacco
In India and many other countries, smokeless forms of tobacco like gutka, khaini, and betel quid have become alarmingly common. Over 90% of oral cancer cases occur in people who consume these harmful products. These forms of tobacco not only damage the mouth and throat but also lead to long-term, often fatal, health consequences.
🧑🦱 Tobacco Use Starts Young
What’s even more concerning is that 90% of smokers begin before the age of 19. Peer pressure, media influence, and curiosity often draw youngsters into this addiction early, making prevention and education critical.
⚠️ The Truth About Vaping
Many believe vaping to be a safer alternative to traditional smoking — but this is a dangerous myth. Not only is vaping banned by law in India, but it also exposes users to harmful chemicals and leads to nicotine addiction, often paving the way to cigarette use. It is important to understand that vaping is not a safe substitute and carries its own serious health risks.
💪 You Can Quit
The good news? Quitting tobacco is possible. Many people have successfully left this habit behind with the right blend of motivation, willpower, and medical guidance. Consulting a physician can provide access to counseling, medications, and strategies tailored to individual needs.
✋ A Pledge for a Healthier Tomorrow
On this World No Tobacco Day, let’s come together and pledge to:
• Say NO to smoking, chewing tobacco, and vaping.
• Support friends and family members in their journey to quit.
• Spread awareness about the dangers of all forms of tobacco.
Let’s choose health, choose life, and create a tobacco-free future for the generations to come.
