TAVI stands for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation. It is also referred to as TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement).
The procedure is for individuals diagnosed with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis and are at intermediate or greater risk for open heart surgery.
The TAVI/TAVR procedure allows a new valve to be inserted within the diseased aortic valve. During the procedure, the new valve pushes the leaflets of the current diseased valve aside. The frame uses the leaflets of the diseased valve to secure it in place.
TAVI/TAVR is a less invasive procedure. It uses a catheter to replace the heart valve instead of opening up the chest of the patient and completely removing the diseased valve. It can be performed in multiple ways.

What is Aortic Stenosis?

Aortic stenosis is a build-up of calcium deposits on the valve, which causes it to narrow and reduce blood flow to the rest of your body.

What are the symptoms of Aortic Stenosis?

  • Shortness of breadth
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty walking short distances
  • Loss of consciousness episodes (Syncope)
  • Chest pain
  • No longer taking part in physical activities you used to enjoy.

These could also be symptoms of heart failure. If you have any of these symptoms and have been diagnosed with heart failure, ask your doctor to also test for aortic stenosis.

  • Increase in age
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Smoking
  • Deformed aortic valve
  • Family history

What causes Aortic Stenosis?

Calcium builds up on the valve:

With age heart valves may accumulate calcium deposits.

Birth defect:

Some people are born with an aortic valve that has only one or two leaflets instead of three. This may not cause any problems until adulthood, at which time the valve may begin to narrow or leak.

Rheumatic fever:

This may result in scar tissue on the aortic valve, which can narrow it or an create a rough surface where calcium deposits can collect.

Radiation therapy:

In rare cases, calcification of the aortic valve can occur more quickly in patients who have received radiation treatment to the chest.

What are the treatment options in TAVR?

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)

TAVR may be an option for people who have been diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis, depending on their risk for open heart surgery. TAVR is a less-invasive procedure than open heart surgery. This procedure uses a catheter to implant a new valve within your diseased aortic valve.

What happens during the TAVR(transcatheter aortic valve replacement)procedure ?

A transcatheter aortic valve replacement procedure (TAVR) is less invasive than open heart surgery. The entire procedure typically takes approximately 1–2 hours. Your heart team will determine whether you should have a mild sedative or general anesthesia.

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement recovery time ?

After your procedure, you may spend a day or more in the intensive care unit (ICU) and another day or two in a patient room. Most patients begin walking within a day or two of their TAVR procedure.
