Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is an extremely common viral infection that affects people of all age groups. Every year, I see children and adults suffering from influenza, especially during seasonal changes and monsoon periods.
Many people tend to dismiss the flu as a simple viral fever, but it can sometimes cause significant illness. The common symptoms include fever, cough, running nose, body ache, headache, and fatigue. While most people recover with appropriate treatment and rest, some patients can develop respiratory distress and may even require hospitalization.
Young infants, elderly individuals, and people with existing medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, asthma, or other chronic illnesses are particularly vulnerable to severe influenza infections and their complications.
One of the most effective ways to protect yourself and your family is through annual influenza vaccination. Since the influenza virus changes over time, the vaccine is updated regularly to provide protection against the strains most likely to circulate during the season. This is why a flu vaccine is recommended every year.
I often tell parents that the small investment made towards vaccination is truly worthwhile when compared to the physical discomfort, missed school or work days, medical expenses, and potential complications associated with influenza infection. Prevention is always better than cure.
The flu vaccine has an excellent safety profile and is recommended for both children and adults. A new trivalent influenza vaccine covering the latest circulating strains is now available and can help provide effective protection during the flu season.
As a pediatrician, I strongly recommend that all eligible family members receive their annual flu vaccination. By getting vaccinated, you are not only protecting yourself but also helping safeguard vulnerable members of your family and community.
