The Centre for Cardiac Rehabilitation at Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital, is a state of the art set up wherein modern exercise equipments along with advanced patient monitoring devices, have been stationed for the purpose of treating patients with cardiac disorders and those at risk of suffering from a cardiac condition. There are two programs: one related to Cardiac Rehabilitation (for post cardiac event recovery) and the other one is Primary Prevention or the Wellness program (for those who have high risk factors that may precipitate a cardiac event). In each category we have special customized programs that are target oriented.

 

What is cardiac rehabilitation?

Cardiac rehabilitation is a customized exercise and life-style modification programme designed to improve the overall quality of life after you have suffered a heart attack, undergone a heart surgery, or if you are at risk of having heart diseases. The goal of cardiac rehabilitation is to help you regain strength, to prevent your condition from aggravating and to reduce your risk of future heart problems.

Cardiac rehabilitation Programme aims to make the patient:

  • Recover faster and feel better
  • Improve stamina and strength
  • Reduce the risks of future heart problem
  • Improve longevity and quality of life

 

Who needs cardiac rehabilitation?

  • Patients who had myocardial Infarction (heart attack).
  • Patients who have undergone surgical intervention such as angioplasty, bypass surgery, valve replacements, Transplants, correction of complex congenital defects etc.
  • Patients who have heart diseases such as cardio-myopathies and are experiencing symptoms like chest pain, breathlessness and palpitation.
  • Patients who have heart disease but are asymptomatic and those people who have the risk for developing heart disease.
  • An established protocol helps enroll the patients into this program. This is done based on the best practices that are followed internationally.
    • Phase I - Early bed sided mobilization and bed exercises.
    • Phase II - Organized physical activity under very close supervision.
    • Phase III - Advanced organized physical activity under close supervision.

Primary prevention or the wellness program?

What is wellness or primary prevention?

Wellness is an approach to healthcare which emphasizes upon preventing illness and prolonging life. It is a condition of good physical and mental health especially through deliberate effort of maintaining proper diet, exercise and lifestyle.

 

Who needs wellness?

We all need to be well and such programmes are for all of us. However, those people who are ‘AT RISK’ of experiencing a cardiac event with 2 or more of the following risk factors:

  • Age more than 40 years. (As heart disease today is increasingly found in a younger generation).
  • Abnormal lipid and cholesterol profiles.
  • Diabetes.
  • High blood pressure (140/90 mm Hg or more).
  • BMI more than 25.
  • Physical inactivity (sedentary life style)
  • Smoking, Alcohol Consumption.
  • Family history of any of the above.

Who would be involved in designing these programmes?

Trained professionals such as Cardio respiratory Physiotherapist and Cardiologist will design your programme. Your dietician shall design your diet and your personal physician or cardiologist will be notified about your progress.

 

What do these programs incorporate?

Medical evaluation

A thorough evaluation helps the team to assess your physical capability, any limitations and other conditions. Based on these findings, they design your programme, making sure that it is safe and effective.

Supervised exercise sessions

Each session is supervised by trained professional cardiovascular and respiratory physiotherapist who are specialized in the field of cardiac rehabilitation and exercise physiology.

 

Location: 8th, Cardiac rehabilitation physiotherapy department.

Days & Timings: Monday to Saturday, 8 am to 7 pm.
