Overview

Good Health, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) is defined as, "A state of complete physical, mental, social and spiritual well being and not merely an absence of disease or infirmity". In consonance with this definition our hospital has started yoga therapy to bring about an integrated approach to good health.

Yoga is not only a set of physical exercises or breathing techniques or meditation but is a way of living where the aim is to promote good health.

Yoga seems to be the earliest and the most effective method for providing peace and tranquility of mind. It is based on the idea that the body and mind have a strong bond. Yogic postures are devised in such a way that all physiological disturbances are removed so that mental activities are placed on a sound footing. By way of ‘Pranadharana’ or breath awareness the cortical influence is minimal and therefore the emotional or intellectual activity is also greatly reduced.

Passive stretching where the muscles and therefore tendons are not stretched beyond their natural limits help in maintaining muscle tone with no damage. Cardio-respiratory centers are maintained at the physiological levels as there is no extra demand for energy and oxygen from the muscles. This restores the parasympathetic pre-dominance in the body. This makes one feel calm and quiet, pleasant and relaxed. The mild and passive stretch of muscles and ligaments causes effective and easy removal of waste products from the joints. It also reduces the rigidity of the joints.

Experimentally it has been observed that the muscle tone is influenced by the emotional state of the individual. The mild, passive and alternate changes of pressure in the internal organs results in stimulation of the autonomic nervous system as the walls of these organs undergo a mild stretching and relaxation alternately. Thus muscle tone of these organs is maintained at the optimum level. Due to this fine balance, emotional stability is also achieved.

Yogic practices not only help in reversing the progress of diseases but also improve the resistance of the body at the psycho-physiological level. They also help in reducing the sensitivity to the environmental stimulation.
Thus it is not enough if we work at the physical level alone; it is complimentary to bring about balance at all other levels too. This is the integrated approach used in Yoga as Therapy.
