Coronaviruses update

  • Coronaviruses were first identified in the 1960s, but we don't know where they come from. They get their name from their crown-like shape. Sometimes, but not often, a coronavirus can infect both animals and humans.
  • Most coronaviruses spread the same way other cold-causing viruses do: through infected people coughing and sneezing, by touching an infected person's hands or face, or by touching things such as doorknobs that infected people have touched.
  • What is Novel corona virus- they are zoonotic which means they transmit between animal and humans. The 2019-nCoV is a new strain of coronaviruses and has not been previously seen in humans, first identified from Wuhan town in China in Dec 2019.
  • Its a large cornoa family that causes illness ranging from common cold to more severe diseases such as Severe Acute Respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory syndrome (MERS).
  • Common Symptoms- runny nose, cough, sore throat, fever, headache, brerathlessness sililar to any other viral fever symptoms.
  • Transmission – main mode of transmission is airborne by coughing and sneezing.
Also contact transmission by in close contact with someone who is carrying the infection by touching or shaking hands.
Touching infected surfaces, objects and then touching your mouth, face nose and/or eyes before washing hands.
  • Prevention- Avoid close contact with people suffering from acute respiratory infections
    Wash hands frequently
Avoid close contact with live or dead farm and wild animals
If you have symptoms of acute respiratory infection, you should practice cough etiquette (maintain distance, cover cough and sneezes with disposable tissues or clothing and wash hands). If you are visiting a live animal market, a wet market or any animal product market, practice general hygiene like regular hand washing with soap and potable water after touching animals and animal products. Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth with hands and avoid any contact with sick animals or spoiled animal products.
Avoid consuming raw or undercooked animal products and handle raw meat and milk with care.
There is no vaccine for coronavirus. To help prevent a coronavirus infection, do the same things you do to avoid the common cold
