METASURG 2010
The 3rd International Conference in Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases was conducted inMumbai on 30th and 31st of October 2010 . It was conducted by Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital,Powai and Laparo Obeso Center under the auspices of OSSI, IDA - Mumbai and IASGO.
For the first time in Asia, there was a live demonstration of various types of Bariatric Operationsand revision surgeries. Eighteen patients were operated by our eminent surgeons: Dr ShashankShah and Dr Jayashree Todkar and the international Faculty : Dr Almino Cardos ,Dr Galvao Netoand Dr Elliot Goodman.
During symposia and discussions following topics were covered:
Technical pearls for operations in Super ( BMI above 50 )and super super obese ( BMI above 60 )patients : how to make the operation feasible and safe
Haemostasis in Bariatric surgery
Discussion with team Anesthesia headed by Dr Laxmi Kamat , HOD , Dr L H HiranandaniHospital and Dr Rajendra Patil , HOD ,RHC , Pune. : what a surgeon must know regardinganaesthesia in Bariatrics .
Endoscopy to evaluate the suboptimal outcomers
Simplified technics of Gastric bypass.
Redo operations : Techniques and safety protocol. Strategies to treat weight regain orcomplications after previous surgical interventions.
More than 100 advanced laparoscopic surgeons from all over Asia attended this highly focussedconference.
For this endevour to be successful the team from Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital and Laparo ObesoCenter conducted a free patient education and consultation camp for two weeks.
All the patients including super obese and the very difficult redos were operated laparoscopicallyand had an uneventful recovery and were discharged from hospital after three post-operative days

DR L H HIRANANDANI HOSPITAL ORGANIZES BREAST CANCER AWARENESS - WALK FOR LIFE – AN ACTION AGAINST BREAST CANCER
Host of celebrities and people from all walks of life got together to Walk for Life
Mumbai, 31st October, 2010
October is the breast cancer awareness month. For this the Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital did awareness programmes at the Hiranandani Gardens & the hospital. Awareness talk at Kensington, the SEZ which employs a large number of young ladies. For our community the hospital organized an awareness talk on Sunday, 10th October, 2010 and finally followed it up with a walk within the Hiranandani Complex (approximately 2 kms) to create awareness amongst the community. The event was being actively supported by the Rotary Club of Powai (The Lakers) who have decided to put their shoulder to the wheel as it is a noble cause. With the support of Sanofi Aventis, Roche Scientific Company (India) Pvt. Ltd & International Oncology Services Pvt. Ltd we carried out the most successful stride for the community.

ANQ CONGRESS MEET 2010 - DELHI
The Nursing Department did a paper presentation (poster) at the ANQ (Asian Network for Quality) meet in Delhi on the topic – Good Nursing care is directly related to patient satisfaction-A study, on 20th Oct 2010.
The Nursing department of Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital took part in the 8th ANQ congress meet, which was held from 19th – 21st October 2010. A paper was presented on the topic – Good Nursing care is directly related to Patient Satisfaction- A study.
A retrospective study was done of the patient’s feedback form over a period of 2 years. The objective of this study was to assess quality of nursing care as indicated by patient’s satisfaction. The 3 quality indicators used for this study were - Nursing care during Day, Nursing care during Night and medication administration.
Patient satisfaction is a unique clinical end point indicator of quality of the health care. Today’s nurse is the instrument through which this level of contentment can be rendered to the patient. Patient satisfaction with nursing care is considered an important factor in explaining patient’s perceptions of quality delivered in the health care sector. It critically contributes to sustaining hospital vibrancy. The nurse at the patient’s bedside with her empathetic manner and devotion to the patient creates value that cannot be replaced by the most sophisticated medical treatment. This is the cornerstone of healthcare.
This study found that most of the patients were satisfied with the nursing care. These findings indicate that nursing care is an important factor for the patient to develop high level of satisfaction which is in line with our mission – To be the preferred choice for healing and good health.

EYE DONATION
A 68 years old patient had developed opaque corneas in both eyes 2 ½ years ago.
This resulted in near total loss of vision. In an effort to help the patient to recover vision (Gods greatest gift) cornea was taken from another patient who was brain dead in this hospital. The deceased patient had pledged his eyes for donation …. An act of supreme selflessness – where loss of life in one has benefited another by getting the vision back.
Patient’s vision is now normal.
The procedure was performed by Dr. Pavitra Bhat.

About eye donation :
Eye donation refers to the act of donating ones eyes after death. It entails informing ones
Relatives about their wish verbally and /or by way of signing a donor card. The relatives of the deceased can decide on eye donation even if an eye donation form has not been signed
After the persons death the family can inform the nearest eye bank.
The eyes need to be collected with in 6 hours of the death. Till the eye bank team arrives please remember the following.
- Keep both the eyes closed and cover with moist cotton.
- Switch off ceiling fans if any.
- Raise the head of the deceased by about 6 inches.
- Keep a copy of death certificate ready.
About Corneal transplantation :
This involves removal of portion of (Partial/lamellar) or complete (full thickness/ penetrating keratoplasty ) removal of a cloudy or deformed cornea and replacement with a donor cornea received from another human being at death by means of eye donation.
A few common indications for this are:
1. Large non-healing corneal ulcers
2. Corneal decompensation after previous eye surgeries.
3. Scarred corneas secondary to
- Injury
- Infection
- Corneal dystrophy / degenerations
- Congenital corneal opacities.
- Genetic disorders-Keratoconus

CISSC 2010
14th Commonwealth International Sports Science Congress 2010 (CISSC 2010) from September 27-30, 2010 in Delhi will be a multidisciplinary congress that will provide the worlds leading sports academicians and practitioners the opportunity to present their work to an international audience as well as interact with professionals who examine sport through a variety of perspective and disciplines. The Organizing Committee has invited the renowned keynote speakers to enlighten the audience with their research and specialization. Dr Vijay Shetty, from Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital, Mumbai will be presenting his experience with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy in sports medicine. Dr LH Hiranandani Hospital is the first hospital in the country to promote the use of PRP in sports medicine and, has treated over fifty patients in the last one year. The title of the presentation, by Dr Vijay Shetty, is Platelet-rich plasma therapy: a “feeling and hope” for the ailing athletes. |

WORLD BLOOD DONOR'S DAY CELEBRATION
World Blood Donor Day was celebrated worldwide on June 14th 2010 with this year’s focus being on ‘Young Donors’ using the slogan “New Blood for the World”. Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital Blood Bank celebrated this occasion by organizing two blood donation camps in the city. On June 15, 2010 a blood donation drive was organized at Kansai Nerolac Paints Ltd, Nerolac House, Lower Parel, where an overwhelming response from the employees resulted in a total collection of 70 donors. Yet another blood donation drive was organized on June 16, 2010 at the Head office of Sodexo Facilities Management Services India Pvt. Ltd., Malad West, where 50 enthusiastic donors turned up, despite the heavy rains, to donate blood for a needy cause. Many who could not donate blood themselves contributed by motivating other young people to become donors. This celebration continues to the end of the month to create awareness among the young people on the importance of voluntary blood donation and encourage them to register as regular blood donors to ensure an adequate and safe blood supply to the National Blood pool.

SKIN AWARENESS PROGRAMME IN HPCL
Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital has organized a skin awareness programme for HPCL lube plant workers at Mazgaon on Friday 21st May, 2010. The topic covered by Dermatologist Dr Vidula Patel was ‘Skin care in summer’. The topic included skin problems faced by the workers on a day to day basis especially in hot and humid climate. The talk was given a warm and enthusiastic response by the audience, with over 60 workers attending the same. It was followed by a lively interactive session with the workers wherein they resolved doubts and queries in their minds.
