NEW INITIATIVE - HOPE ( HIGH RISK O.P.D)
Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital is launching a new initiative called HOPE (High Risk O.P.D.). This is an initiative to address the development of children who were born premature or born with very low birth weight or had some complication during delivery. It is well known that such babies, while in hospital may thrive and seem apparently normal but when they are discharged home parents may find that their children have some delay in development milestones that may cause them concern but they defer seeking medical aid as they feel that the delay is transient and baby would pick up. In the long run they may find that this is not the case.
Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital is launching an early intervention programme which would help pick up such disorders. To quote Bernadette Melnyk, RN, FAAN, Dean and Distinguished Foundation Professor in Nursing at Arizona State Univesity’s College of Nursing and Health Innovation, “Evidence suggests that low –birth-weight infants experience adverse physical, mental and behavioral outcomes that persist beyond school age”.
This clinic starts from June 03, 2010 by Dr Snehal Despande, Physiotherapist and Dr Bijal Shrivastav , Paeditatrician at the Paediatric OPD on the ground floor every Thursday, 1 to 3 pm.

NURSING – DEFINING NEW FRONTIERS
NURSING CONCLAVE - 5TH MARCH 2010, MUMBAI
The CII Nursing Conclave was held on 5th March 2010 at Hotel Inter Continental The Lalit, Mumbai, to commemorate the excellent selfless service rendered by the Nurses in India and also to highlight the current problems in nursing
The nursing conclave was conducted for the first time under the aegis of the CII by healthcare sub-committee, Western Region. The aim is to be able to create awareness that there is a clear and present need for change in the nursing cadre in this country.
The backbone of healthcare worldwide is optimal nursing care. The nursing profession today has moved by leaps and bounds in India and also the world over. The dichotomy being that despite rendering excellent selfless service, this cadre does not get its due recognition in our country where the nurse is still subservient to the doctor. To create a paradigm shift in the prevailing thought process the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) had taken the lead to conduct the Nursing Conclave.
Because of good career opportunities in their own country, the Indian nurses take up job in other countries where there are good avenues to enhance their career.
Nursing shortage is perceived immediately within the country when hospitals are commissioned in the Middle East and recently in South Africa, less so when they open in the continent of Europe. There are spates of resignations and the trained talent pool is lost to another. This too should be avoided. The conclave also addressed the issue of other opportunities for nurses to enhance their income like their peers overseas.

WOMAN BACK HOME IN 14 HRS AFTER KNEE OPERATION
SURGERY GETS THE COMPUTER EDGE
Mumbai: For six years, Chembur resident Devyani Kapadia bore the pain in her right knee before meeting a doctor. Once the 56-year-old did that, not only did her pain vanish after a computer-assisted, joint replacement surgery, but she was back home in 14 hours.
“A month ago, I consulted at Hiranandani Hospital in Powai” says Kapadia. “My surgery was done last Friday in the evening. By Saturday morning, I was walking on my own and so discharged from hospital,” she says, adding that she has been doing physiotherapy at home.
While recent advances have steadily decreased the number of days that a patient has to stay in hospital, Kapadia’s example is a new record of sorts. “Earlier, with huge cuts in knee, patients used to be kept in the hospital with a plaster for three weeks after a joint replacement. Now, with minimally invasive techniques, less tissues are cut to fix a joint, which enables a faster
Healing,” says Dr Sanjeev Jain, joint replacement surgeon, who operated on Kapadai. In a computer-assisted surgery, the surgery is literally assisted by a software using infra-red rays. “While the surgeon performs the operation, the computer takes exact measurement and give suggestions as to what the surgeon should do and in
which direction. It is thus possible to fit a knee with less than a 10-cm cut,” says Dr Jain.
But Dr Jain adds that the credit for the ‘discharge with in 14 hours’ goes to the patient. “It varies from patient to patient. Many patients are scared that going home so early after the surgery might be harmful. But practically, once the patient is able to move on his/her own, there is no reason to stay in hospital,” he adds.
But Dr Pradeep Bhosale, head of the orthopedic department in KEM Hospital, says a patient should stay in hospital for four days after a knee surgery.” All surgeries carry some risks. Even if the person starts walking the next day, he cannot be allowed to go home.Care has to be taken to ensure that he/she is capable of independent mobility.”

The main objective of the seminar is to achieve greater awareness among stakeholders such as nursing home owners, managers/trustees of large hospitals and others associated with the Health Care industry on the importance of Quality in Health Care.
The seminar will address various topics that includes:
1. Why Quality in healthcare is important?
The topic would address rising expectation from TPA and Patients. TPA’s thrust on a differentiating factor for empanelment and payment negotiation with the hospital and ever rising patient awareness on quality and choice of hospital.
2. Quality Healthcare a fundamental Right.
a. The topic would highlight patient rights, safety, and listening methods to enhance the customer’s experience during his visit to the hospital
b. The topic would also discuss on the gap which exists today in terms of quality in healthcare.
3. The price of quality
a. Many quality gurus say that there is no cost to quality. However that is true if one embarks on that journey from day one where quality is streamlined into the system. For existing organizations that are desirous of embarking on the journey of quality and accreditation, there will be certain drastic changes required including additional training, introduction of systems and staff, which would add to the cost of operations.
b. The topic would also focus on better outcomes achieved by a healthcare organization if it embarks on the journey of quality by way of better turn around times/shorter ALOS/Higher bed capacity/Less nosocomial infection/cheaper care/right first time/less errors/credibility.
4. The answer
a. ISO 9001 Quality Management System
b. Accreditation
c. Importance of paper writing.
Industry experts including Mr Suresh Lulla from Quimpro, Mrs Geeta Bharadwaj from IMC and others shall share their expertise and knowledge."
